We are currently tracking another outage affecting our WordPress Hosting and support e-mail systems which started at 22:28 this evening (UK Time). This seems to be a networking fault in the datacentre hosting our infrastructure. All services are completely offline.

The datacentre is already aware of the issue and working on a resolution.

[Resolved] Slow sites on WordPress hosting servers

At 19:24 we were notified that sites on our WordPress hosting were running slowly.

Investigating (28 Mar at 19:52 +0100) We have identified that one of our security partners responsible for checking the security of our customers sites is being a little over zelous and is causing very high load on the infrastructure.

Monitoring (28 Mar at 21:19 +0100) We have taken the decision to block traffic from our security partner in order to get sites running at their ultimate speed again. This has returned sites to normal.

Resolved (28 Mar at 21:49 +0100) All systems are back to normal now, but we’re monitoring closely. In this case our own protection bit us. Our partner was not rate limited like normal traffic was and so managed to case this issue. We will be changing this setup during our next maintenance window.

We are currently tracking an outage affecting our WordPress and support e-mail systems which started at 08:32 this morning. This seems to be a networking fault in the datacentre hosting our infrastructure. The services aren’t completely offline however a lot of requests are being rejected.

We have raised an issue with the datacentre hosting your server and are are awaiting a reply. We are tracking a large number of issues with servers in this datacentre so we imagine they are already working on a resolution.

Update (31 Jan at 09:52 UTC) The Datacentre has replied with: “An issue was impacting IPv6 connectivity in our London data center was identified starting at ~8:22AM UTC. This issue has since been corrected as of ~9:33AM UTC. We will be monitoring this to ensure that it remains stable”.

Resolved (31 Jan at 10:00 UTC) We are happy that all systems have returned to normal. We did identify issues affecting IPv4 as well as IPv6 however this may well have been systems failing over to IPv4.

The datacentre hosting these services will be performing network maintenance on Tuesday 18 January 2022 from 00:00 (UTC) until 03:30 (UTC). During this window, they will be performing code upgrades on some networking equipment. While they do not expect any downtime, a brief period of increased latency or packet loss may occur.

Resolved (18 Jan at 00:09 UTC) We detected a networking outage between 00:33 - 00:39 UTC this morning and only affected networking (mainly IPv6 but some IPv4). We are happy everything has returned to normal now.

We were alerted to an outage with our WordPress hosting services between 13:24 and 13:30 UK time.

A number of malicous IPs were scanning sites causing increased resource usage. Our ratelimiting automatically detected and blocked these IPs, bringing resource usage back to normal resolving the issue.

We currently have intermittent connectivity issues to our email and wordpress hosting servers.

Ongoing (27 Jul at 21:37 +0100) This apears to be an issue with connectivity between the datacentre hosting these servers and the rest of the internet. We are already discussing options with them and will place workarounds in place as soon as possible.

Monitoring (27 Jul at 22:41 +0100) Things seem to have returned to normal. We will continue to observe things overnight.

Confirmed (27 Jul at 23:11 +0100) The datacentre have confirmed that they had a transit provider that was passing traffic on damaged fiber. They have now routed their network around the issue.

Resolved (28 Jul at 08:23 +0100) We are happy to report that everything has been stable for a number of hours so we are reslving this issue.

These updates patch vulnerabilities that meant any unprivileged user who exploited it could gain root privileges on the vulnerable host and any unprivileged user could exploit this vulnerability to crash systemd and the entire operating system.

Our WordPress hosting servers are showing timeouts on some pages and others are slow to respond. We are Investigating.

Update: 18:52 We have identified that a very large number of WordPress sites are being attacked from a very large number of sources. This is very hard to automatically differentiate from legitimate traffic. We are attempting to manually identify a commonality.

Update: 19:12 The attack continues but we are happy that we have mitigated the worst of it. We will continue to monitor and block traffic as required.

Update 20:09 We are continuing to block attacks and monitor the situation however we are happy that sites are up and responding.

Update 21:18 Traffic has returned to normal and all systems are nominal again.

Dogsbody Technology continuously monitors the health of our equipment and we’ve been alerted to a condition which affects the physical server on which our customers WordPress sites are hosted. While we have determined that this is not an emergency, this should be addressed in order to optimize the performance of the server.

We have scheduled a maintenance window for the server: Friday, September 16, 2016 at 3:00 AM UTC

Downtime from this maintenance is expected to be no more than 1 hour. Please note, however, that the entire maintenance window may be required.
