We are migrating our E-mail infrastructure and have taken the decision to do this work during the day to keep our services as online as possible.

Emails to and from Dogsbody Technology may be delayed during this time. No e-mail will be lost.

We will continue to monitor systems and do not rely on e-mail to be notified of issues.

Starting
 (09 Nov at 11:03 UTC)

We are starting this work now.

Complete
 (09 Nov at 14:00 UTC)

This migration is complete and e-mail is now flowing normally again. Theer may still be e-mail held on servers we don’t control which will come in over the next 2 hours

Resolved
 (09 Nov at 16:00 UTC)

We are happy that the backlog of e-mails have been processed and everything is working as expected.

At 19:24 we were notified that sites on our WordPress hosting were running slowly.

Investigating
 (28 Mar at 19:52 +0100)

We have identified that one of our security partners responsible for checking the security of our customers sites is being a little over zelous and is causing very high load on the infrastructure.

Monitoring
 (28 Mar at 21:19 +0100)

We have taken the decision to block traffic from our security partner in order to get sites running at their ultimate speed again. This has returned sites to normal.

Resolved
 (28 Mar at 21:49 +0100)

All systems are back to normal now, but we’re monitoring closely. In this case our own protection bit us. Our partner was not rate limited like normal traffic was and so managed to case this issue. We will be changing this setup during our next maintenance window.

We are currently tracking an outage affecting our WordPress and support e-mail systems which started at 08:32 this morning. This seems to be a networking fault in the datacentre hosting our infrastructure. The services aren’t completely offline however a lot of requests are being rejected.

We have raised an issue with the datacentre hosting your server and are are awaiting a reply. We are tracking a large number of issues with servers in this datacentre so we imagine they are already working on a resolution.

We’ll update you when we have more information

Update
 (31 Jan at 09:52 UTC)

The Datacentre has replied with: “An issue was impacting IPv6 connectivity in our London data center was identified starting at ~8:22AM UTC. This issue has since been corrected as of ~9:33AM UTC. We will be monitoring this to ensure that it remains stable”.

Resolved
 (31 Jan at 10:00 UTC)

We are happy that all systems have returned to normal. We did identify issues affecting IPv4 as well as IPv6 however this may well have been systems failing over to IPv4.

The datacentre hosting these services will be performing network maintenance on Tuesday 18 January 2022 from 00:00 (UTC) until 03:30 (UTC). During this window, they will be performing code upgrades on some networking equipment. While they do not expect any downtime, a brief period of increased latency or packet loss may occur.

Resolved
 (18 Jan at 00:09 UTC)

We detected a networking outage between 00:33 - 00:39 UTC this morning and only affected networking (mainly IPv6 but some IPv4). We are happy everything has returned to normal now.

Our datacentre has informed us of some emergency maintenance work on part of their core network infrastructure…

“Our engineering team will work with Cisco TAC to re-introduce a core switch back into service. The switch was removed from service earlier today and is now ready to be returned to active service. All the work will be completed by our Network Team in tandem with Cisco TAC and Data Centre technicians. We advise customers to plan for some intermittent network interruption during the window. We will work to keep this to a minimum, but we do expect some short periods as the network converges to bring the spine back into service.”

The Datacentre that hosts our cPanel servers will be carrying out core network upgrades. Customers may see a small period of disruption whilst services are moved between pairs of equipment. All connections that are being worked on are part of redundant pairs. All customers should consider their services to be “at risk” for the entire duration of the maintenance window

Our network engineering team will be moving services within the site between our current platform and our new 100G Cisco platform.

The maintenance work has been split into multiple nights to allow for a controlled and careful move of circuits between the devices with adequate time for testing of each moved connection and any rollbacks that may be required. We will be performing the maintenance on the nights 6th - 10th September 2021, beginning at 23:00 (BST) on each night and finishing at 04:00 (BST) the following morning.

All of the work will be completed by our experienced network and datacentre team.

As with any upgrade or maintenance work there is an increased risk to services. Customers may experience a brief period of service disruption as services fail to a redundant path. All customers should consider their services to be “at risk” for the entire duration of the maintenance window.

Our cPanel hosting servers will be rebooted on Sunday between 20:00 and 23:00 BST on 15th Aug 2021 to install a number of critical updates. These updates patch vulnerabilities that meant any unprivileged user who exploited it could gain root privileges on the vulnerable host and any unprivileged user could exploit this vulnerability to crash systemd and the entire operating system.

A three-hour window is allocated. However, the actual downtime is typically less than 15 minutes.

Starting
 (15 Aug at 22:10 +0100)

We are starting this work now

Complete
 (15 Aug at 22:33 +0100)

We currently have intermittent connectivity issues to our email and wordpress hosting servers.

Ongoing
 (27 Jul at 21:37 +0100)

This apears to be an issue with connectivity between the datacentre hosting these servers and the rest of the internet. We are already discussing options with them and will place workarounds in place as soon as possible.

Monitoring
 (27 Jul at 22:41 +0100)

Things seem to have returned to normal. We will continue to observe things overnight.

Confirmed
 (27 Jul at 23:11 +0100)

The datacentre have confirmed that they had a transit provider that was passing traffic on damaged fiber. They have now routed their network around the issue.

Resolved
 (28 Jul at 08:23 +0100)

We are happy to report that everything has been stable for a number of hours so we are reslving this issue.

We tracked an outage with our cPanel hosting services between 15:56 and 16:02 UK time.

This was down to a large outage in the Datacenter that hosts these servers.

We have requested a root cause analysis from Datacenter to identify what the issues were.

E-mail to and from Dogsbody Technology could be delayed or bounce. We are currently investigating the issue.

Update 09:00: Some remote DNS blocklist providers have blocked all IPv6 addresses of our upstream hosting provider. This only affects mail delivered via IPv6 where our customers are using one of these blocklists or their servers are using the same hosting provider as us.

Update 10:00: We now have a workaround in place for inbound mail to us and are working on a workaround for outbound mail from us.

Update 12:00: We now have a workaround in place for outbound mail from us. We are now looking at permanent options to resolve this.

23 Feb 2021: The blocklists have now removed the blocks. We are leaving workarounds in place for a couple of days to let the dust settle.

25 Feb 2021: We have been monitoring this over the last few days and have now rolled back the workarounds. Everything is working as expected.

We will be upgrading PHP on the Purple server between 10:00 and 17:00 BST on Sun 22nd Oct 2017.

We will be upgrading the server to PHP v5.6.31.

We have fully tested this upgrade and don’t anticipate any issues however this may affect people running old scripts written for older versions of PHP.

We are not anticipating any downtime however some services will be restarted which may cause outages of a few seconds.

Please take this as an opportunity to check the version of any CMS system you are using (such as Wordpress or Joomla) and make sure you are using the latest version. This is required for the security of your site as well as giving you the latest features.

Update 11:44: We are about to start this work and will update when this work has been done.

Update 11:57: This work has been done without issue.

We currently have an issue with our support ticketing system and have temporarily paused emails coming into our ticketing system to ensure messages aren’t lost while we debug the problem.

Due to the reduced visibility of support tickets we maybe slower responding to messages during this period. Please feel free to call us on +44 (0)1276 818576 if you have any urgent issues.

Email directly to staff members will not be affected.

Update: 13 Aug 2017 23:47 - We have a working solution and have successfully imported all the mail from 11 Aug 2017 that was held on the server. We won’t enable this externally just yet as we wish to view the mail entering the system and check everything is OK so this will be done tomorrow morning.

Update: 14 Aug 2017 09:35 - All services back to normal. Queued mail has been processed. No mail was lost.

Dogsbody Technology continuously monitors the health of our equipment and we’ve been alerted to a condition which affects the physical server on which our customers WordPress sites are hosted. While we have determined that this is not an emergency, this should be addressed in order to optimize the performance of the server.

We have scheduled a maintenance window for the server: Friday, September 16, 2016 at 3:00 AM UTC

Downtime from this maintenance is expected to be no more than 1 hour. Please note, however, that the entire maintenance window may be required.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions concerning this maintenance window.

It seems users on the Purple server cannot login to collect mail or update their sites. It is suspected that this is caused by an upgrade done at 19:37 last night.

[Resolved] Outage of services on Orange and Purple servers

We are getting high packet loss to our orange and purple servers.

Initial investigations show this is a networking issue with our upstream provider. A ticket has been raised and we continue to investigate.

Update: We have now received the following from our upstream provider…

This evening at approximately 1AM we were the target of a significant DDoS attack, approximately 75Gbit/s in size.

As a result, many upstream connections were affected and this would have caused some level of packet loss for clients, ranging from minor to extreme, for approximately 30 minutes. Depending on where users connect to your service from would depend on whether they were affected.

Our group’s network and infrastructure team were alerted to identify the destination of the attack, which was null-routed as soon as the target could be identified. Given the size of the attack and activity on social networking sites, we believe it was organised by a team of professional attackers who also claim to have taken down some very large organisations this evening.

We are intensively monitoring the network traffic to ensure there is no recurrence.

We sincerely apologise for the interruption to service for any customers affected and you can be assured we will continue to do everything we can to mitigate the effects such attacks have for clients.

We will be upgrading the servers orange and purple over the weekend of 15-16 Feb 2014.

Orange will be upgraded at 23:00 on Sat 15 Feb 2014

Purple will be upgraded at 23:00 on Sun 16 Feb 2014

Services will be upgraded one by one and take around 30 minutes. We will then take the opportunity to reboot these servers to load a new Kernel which will take all sites offline for around 3 minutes.

We are utilising the Christmas break to migrate the orange server to a new IP address range. This will add additional capacity as well as allowing us to start adding IPv6 services.

The migration will occur between 20:00 and 23:59 on Sat 28th Dec 2013.

No customers will be affected however access to our website (dogsbodyhosting.net & dogsbodytechnology.com) maybe limited and emails to us maybe delayed during this time.

We have identified an issue with users accessing email (POP3, IMAP & SMTP) via SSL.

Users may see SSL warnings to say that the certificate expired today. We can assure you that the certificate has been renewed.

This will only affect users that send or collect email via SSL.

Update: This issue has now been fixed. All email will have remained encrypted at all times.

We have been slowly migrating users from our old Yellow server to our shiny new Purple server and planned to complete this work in June.

Unfortunately the Yellow server has developed a fault which means we need to expedite up the migration which will now be done over the next three days.

No email will be lost in the migration however email may be delayed while it finds it’s way from the old server to the new one.

We apologies for any inconvenience caused.

Please do contact us if you find any issues with your site or email after this time.

The RAID on Yellow has become degraded and requires a rebuild.

This should not cause any outage however services may run a little slow while the build is in progress.

The build will be completed by 02:00

Unfortunately some routine maintenance to the server purple.dogsbodyhosting.net has caused it to go offline.

We are investigating the issue and will aim to get it back online ASAP.

Update: 21.48 - The root cause was found to be some file corruption in the main operating system. This was very small and limited to one (important) file. This has now been repaired and all services are operating properly again.

Apologies for any inconvenience.

Users of our purple.dogsbodyhosting.net server maybe having issues connecting to services.

Our external monitoring is showing connectivity issues from some points of the internet but not others.

We are investigating with our upstream providers but initial indications show this is a routing error elsewhere on the internet that we cannot fix directly ourselves.

We will liaise with the relevant parties and update this post with more information when we have it.

Update: 23:17 - Connectivity has been restored and all services have resumed to normal working service. We will keep monitoring this closely for the next few hours.

Update: 11:58 (26 Feb 2013) - An update from our upstream provider… “Tonight we were mitigating a large inbound DDOS attack which would have caused a small number of our clients on this particular segment of the network to have connectivity issues. This started at about 22:20 25 Feb 2013 and was on going for roughly 45 minutes. Our network engineers worked on resolving the issue quickly and connectivity issues now seem to have been resolved, we are monitoring the situation closely.”

Apologies for any inconvenience.

[Resolved] Disabling SSH access to all servers

It seems there is a major “0-day” vulnerability doing the rounds and a lot of data is showing SSH as the attack vector, even though the exact vulnerability hasn’t been fully discovered yet or patched.

A number of hosts have already been compromised and we feel it would be better to block SSH access to our servers now and keep your data secure than wait until something goes wrong.

If you desperately need SSH access then please do contact us and we’ll be glad to add your IP address to our whitelists.

For those of you interested, the vulnerability seems to mostly affect Redhat/CentOS (which we use) with cPanel/Plesk installed (which we do not use) but not exclusively which is why we are taking this action.

For more information on this vulnerability please see…

http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=1235797

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=911937

Update: This has now been shown to be a vulnerability that only affects cPanel. We are opening access back up on those servers with public access. Thank you for your understanding during this. We do everything we can to keep your data safe.

Users of our yellow.dogsbodyhosting.net server may have noticed delayed incoming email today.

We have identified the issue which was caused by a DNS server migration that had an unintended knock on change to our mailserver.

Mail was affected between 11:44 and 16:20 on Tue 4th Dec 2012.

No mail should have been lost and mail will continue to come back in to your inboxes over the next hour.
